Do you ever wonder what is the correct way to eat a sushi? Nowadays, when you ask the chef they would probably say, “Eat in whatever way you want.” This in fact reflects how some of us are eating sushi in the wrong way. We should eat something truly delicious in a genuinely fond way.
Whenever a Japanese enters a restaurant, they would first look for the available seats in the counter bar. Yet in our culture, we tend to choose a table seat over the counter bar. Nevertheless, the Japanese believe that the best way to eat a sushi is to eat at the counter and to be able to talk with the chef.
At the counter bar, we should eat sushi with our own hands rather than using a chopstick. However, other menu despite sushi should be eaten with a chopstick. Therefore, the order of the sushi(s) will be directly received by the chef. The sushi will, then, be served in an appropriate size and portion. Holding a sushi in our hand, remember to dip only a small amount of soy sauce with the fish side (not the rice). Then, we put the whole piece in our mouth with the fish side touching our tongue. However, chopsticks must be used when we take sushi(s) from a shared plate. (As seen in the picture above.) Lastly, chopsticks should be placed on the "Hashi-Oki," or the chopsticks holder, as a signal that we are done.
